What it covers

The SBA 7(a) program works through participating lenders. Eligible uses can include real estate and building work, working capital, refinancing business debt, equipment, supplies, and a change of ownership.

Small Business Development Centers provide individual advising, training, and technical help for people preparing to start a business and for existing small businesses. Topics can include business planning, operations, financial management, marketing, and access to capital.

Eligibility

An SBA 7(a) borrower must be an operating, for-profit business in the United States, meet SBA size requirements, be creditworthy, show an ability to repay, and meet the program’s other conditions. A participating lender determines what documents and loan structure fit the application.

SBDC advising serves pre-venture entrepreneurs and existing small businesses. Use the official finder to locate the center serving your area and confirm available services.

How to apply

  1. Write down what the business needs and how the funds would be used.
  2. Contact an SBDC for advising and help preparing the business plan and financial information.
  3. Use SBA Lender Match or contact a participating lender.
  4. Apply through the lender, not directly through SBA.
  5. Check current terms, amounts, and program details on the official pages before applying.
